Melissa Glenn (stand-up bass and vocals) has lived
the bluegrass music since childhood. While growing up in Medford,
Oregon, her father (John Bivens) played in bluegrass bands all around
the west. Bill Monroe hired him to play guitar in his Bluegrass Boys
when John was just 19. He declined but went on to play with the likes
of Leroy Mack and Ken Orrick. Her father passed on unexpectedly when
Melissa was twelve. The music all comes natural and from her heart.
She has a unique bass rhythm that keeps all of the boys in line.
Her lead singing and high tenors are a highlight in the band. Melissa
is married to Kevin, the guitar player. They have two kids, J.D.
and Lecsi. When each child was still in the womb, they were at the
band’s many gigs. At one gig, Melissa was 8 months pregnant.
There is no escape from the music for them and they will be the legacy
of Frying Pan Bluegrass.
Kevin Glenn (guitar and vocals) co-founded the
band with John Livingston. From Richmond, Virginia, Kevin carries
the southern tradition of the music. When just a boy, his mother
taught him how to play guitar. Kevin’s flat-picking style can
always be explained as fast, clean, and full of tasty licks. His
impeccable rhythm is often emulated but never duplicated. He also
does a lot of lead and harmony singing in the group. Kevin is married
to the bass player, Melissa, and the two have lived on the Frying
Pan River since 1991. Kevin’s guitar influences include Doc
Watson, Tony Rice, and Larry Keel. Kevin and Melissa have two children,
J.D. and Lecsi. Kevin is the second half of the Fishin’ Musicians.
He and John entertain as the fly fishing guide/music duo.
Originally from Glencoe, Missouri, John Livingston began
playing bluegrass banjo while attending the University of Colorado-Boulder.
Although his bachelor degrees weren’t in music, he spent most
of his free time immersing himself in the bluegrass along the Front
Range. After graduation, John moved to Aspen. He had the opportunity
to meet and play with other local musicians. By 1995, his first band,
the Bad Ass Bluegrass Brothers, finished third at the Telluride Bluegrass
Festival Band Competition. In 1998, Kevin Glenn (also from the BABB)
and John co-founded Frying Pan Bluegrass. John’s 1978 Stelling
Gospel banjo helps define and transfer his bluegrass style. He writes,
sings, and arranges a lot of material for the band. His song, Stoney
Mountain, was recently selected to be on the 2005 Colorado Bluegrass
Music Society’s, Collection of Songs From “Bands On Call” Volume
III. In the summertime, John is a well-known fly fishing guide in
the Basalt area.
Kory Krahl (fiddle, mandolin, vocals) grew up
in Westwood Kansas. Even though he joined the band in 2005, he met
everyone as soon as he moved to Aspen in 1999. When not playing in
his various music groups, Kory is a highly requested luthier. He
has been restoring acoustic instruments for 6 years. A lot of his
business comes from the Great Divide Music store in Aspen. Kory has
that awesome fiddle sound that does a lot of justice for the bluegrass
tradition. He has a lot of fiddle tunes in his repertoire and after
you hear his mandolin playing, you’ll realize that he could
have the mandolin spot in any band.
